Love & SONshine Ministries: A Safe Haven of Hope, Healing and Transformation
Love & SONshine Ministries began when sisters Heidi Williams and Heather Petty felt called to serve homeless pregnant and parenting young mothers in Billings. They saw a gap in services for these vulnerable young women and believed God was leading them to provide safety, stability, and support. What started as a vision for housing has grown into a comprehensive residential ministry rooted in the love of Jesus, offering guidance, healing, and hope.
Their inspiration came from both faith and urgency. The statistics surrounding homelessness among pregnant and parenting youth in Montana revealed a crisis. Many of the young mothers who arrive at their door have experienced trauma, abuse, or rejection and are struggling to survive. Love & SONshine Ministries was created to meet the needs of these young women with compassion, practical support, and the belief that every mother deserves a chance at a better future.
What makes the ministry unique is its three-phase residential program designed specifically for homeless pregnant or parenting moms. They don’t only offer shelter; they provide a pathway to independence through life skills training, counseling, employment support, and spiritual guidance. In 2024, they assisted 50 young mothers, housed 10, and sheltered 14 infants and children, including three babies saved from abortion. They also witnessed five professions of faith and baptisms, reflecting the spiritual growth happening within the home.
Many people may not realize how many barriers these young women face. When they arrive, they often lack identification documents, childcare, transportation, or clothing for job interviews. Some are navigating trauma that makes daily functioning overwhelming. Love & SONshine helps remove these obstacles step by step, allowing each mother to heal, stabilize, and build a strong foundation before stepping into independence. Once these barriers are lifted, the transformation is remarkable.
The spirit of the ministry is rooted in unconditional love, hope, and the belief that transformation is possible for everyone. Their home is warm and family-like, a place where young mothers feel safe, valued, and supported as they learn to care for themselves and their children. While the ministry is grounded in Christian faith, it welcomes anyone seeking stability and encouragement.
What they cherish most is watching young mothers rediscover their worth. Graduating from the program, securing employment, or simply watching a baby take their first steps in a safe environment are moments that capture the heart of their mission.
Their annual “Night of Radiance” event has become a beloved community gathering each September. It raises essential funds while helping the community understand the ministry’s impact.
Billings has played a vital role in their growth. Local donors, community partners, and businesses have embraced their mission and helped create a strong network of support. This generosity allows Love & SONshine to meet needs far beyond the basics and offer truly comprehensive care.
One moment that symbolizes their mission was the birth of the first baby at SONshine Home. Born on Christmas Eve, the child arrived to a mother who had once considered adoption and even suicide. Seeing her hold her healthy baby in a safe and loving environment captured everything the ministry strives to provide hope during a mother’s darkest season.
They often hear from former residents that Love & SONshine saved their lives or changed the trajectory of their family. For the ministry, there is no greater affirmation than knowing a young mother was given the chance to thrive.
Looking ahead, Love & SONshine is developing an innovative vision called Family Neighborhoods. A Jesus-centered community where program graduates can live independently while still receiving support. With rent-to-own options, mentorship, and connection, this model would help mothers build stability and generational strength.
