Journey Through the History of Women in Country Music

Step back in time and explore the powerful stories behind the pioneering women of country music. Using images, narration, and, most importantly, song, Almeda Bradshaw, an award-winning Western artist, brings to life the rich history of women in country music, starting with the folk songs sung by Scots-Irish immigrant women in the 1700s and leading up to the feminist movement’s influence on legends like Loretta Lynn and Dolly Parton. With five shows, each featuring a different era and influential female artist, this series is an unforgettable journey through music history.

For over 25 years, Almeda Bradshaw has captivated audiences with her storytelling and musical talent. A former schoolteacher and member of Humanities Montana’s Speakers Bureau, she has traveled across the state sharing the legacy of women in country music. Now, she’s bringing her passion and knowledge to Art House Billings, where the intimate setting and vibrant atmosphere create the perfect backdrop for her unique blend of education and entertainment.

The first show, “The Importance of Her Voice: Song in the Lives of Mountain Women”, kicks off on March 6, 2025, offering a fascinating glimpse into how early folk songs shaped women’s experiences and cultural identity. Almeda shares, “The songs are what people come for and the story wrapped around each song.” Each performance in the series dives into the lives, challenges, and triumphs of remarkable women who helped shape country music as we know it today. From the forgotten cowgirl singers of the past to the bold voices that broke Nashville’s glass ceiling, Almeda’s shows celebrate the resilience and creativity of women who dared to sing their truth.
