Gainan's Flowers Celebrates 75 Years with Anniversary Open House

This year, Eastern Montana's longest running family owned flower shop is celebrating 75 years of being part of our community's story, and they want you there to help mark the occasion.

75 Years Rooted in Billings

Here's a fun one for the local history buffs: Gainan's started because Grant Gainan, Billings' first Fire Marshall, came home from work one day and told his wife, Betty, he was quitting to open a flower shop. Betty admittedly "didn't know a petunia from a geranium," but she was all in on the adventure. Gainan's Floral opened April 28, 1951, with a full page announcement in the Billings Gazette promising "a most unique display of unusual flowers, plants, centerpieces, corsages, floral supplies and tropical fish."

By 1955, business was booming enough that the family moved into a bigger space at 501 N 30th Street, a former appliance shop they'd renovate and expand nine separate times over the next 35 years. They even moved their three kids into an apartment attached to the store. This was truly a family business: the kids swept floors and washed buckets, and Betty could be spotted all over town making deliveries in her 1951 Chevrolet van, lovingly nicknamed "The Panic Wagon."

When Grant passed away in 1978, sons Chuck and Mick stepped up to run the store alongside Betty. The 1980s brought the Heights Garden Center and a new downtown storefront, and in 1996, Gainan's got ahead of the curve with one of Billings' earliest business websites, complete with online ordering, gardening tips, and virtual store tours.

A Family Legacy in Bloom

These days, it's Mick and his wife, Lynnette, along with their kids, Jim Gainan and Kristi Gainan-Sparboe, keeping the family tradition growing. You'll find Gainan's at their Midtown location on 17th and Grand, at the Heights Garden Center, and online at Gainans.com.

"It has been a privilege to be a part of so many families' most important moments for 75 years," said Jim Gainan, Vice President of Gainan's Flowers. "We look forward to celebrating all that's yet to come!"

Seventy five years is no small thing, and this is a milestone worth showing up for. Swing by the Midtown store on September 18 and 19 to help Gainan's celebrate three quarters of a century of blooming right alongside Billings.
