Forged in Montana: How Montana Silversmiths Became a Western Icon
For more than 50 years, Montana Silversmiths has been creating pieces that tell stories, celebrate milestones, and honor western tradition. What started in 1973 as a small trophy company on Main Street in Columbus, Montana, has grown into one of the most recognized western jewelry and buckle brands in the country, all while staying rooted in the values and landscape that inspired it from the beginning.
Founded by local rancher Kent Williams, the company quickly expanded from trophies into handcrafted jewelry and western accessories. Today, Montana Silversmiths is known nationwide for its iconic belt buckles, jewelry collections, and collaborations, but the heart of the business remains right here in Montana.
Located in Columbus, the company has become one of the largest employers in Stillwater County, with team members commuting from surrounding communities, including Billings. That local connection continues to shape everything they do.
With a deep appreciation for Montana heritage, Montana Silversmiths finds inspiration in the local landscape, that is evident throughout every collection. From western craftsmanship to modern styling, Montana Silversmiths continues to evolve while staying true to its roots. The brand describes its style as “western core but venturing into new audiences,” regularly styling musicians and athletes while maintaining the authenticity longtime customers have come to love.
One area the company is especially proud of is its USA-made product line. Their American-made collaboration with country artist Coffey Anderson is one example of how Montana craftsmanship continues to reach new audiences while supporting domestic manufacturing.
Behind every buckle and jewelry piece is a level of craftsmanship many customers may never realize. According to the team, it takes at least 26 caring hands to produce a single buckle. From design and engraving to finishing and polishing, each piece passes through multiple skilled artisans before reaching customers.
That attention to detail has helped create lasting relationships with generations of customers. Many families have made Montana Silversmiths part of their traditions, returning year after year for anniversaries, holidays, rodeos, and special celebrations.
"The best compliments the business has received are the stories of how they’ve become part of people’s lives and traditions,” Carlee in marketing shared. “Husbands will call in during their anniversary or Christmas to order their wife a gift because that's what they've been doing for 20+ years. Those are the best stories and biggest compliments!”
Custom belt buckles remain one of the company’s most popular offerings. From rodeo champions and livestock shows to corporate awards and personal keepsakes, these custom pieces often carry deep meaning for the people receiving them.
The company has also seen firsthand just how sentimental those items can become. One memorable story involved a customer who lost his buckle in a pond while rescuing his horse. Years later, the buckle was found in mint condition. In another case, customers sent in buckles damaged in house fires for refinishing and were amazed when the restored pieces looked brand new.
Beyond craftsmanship, Montana Silversmiths is deeply invested in supporting the next generation. Through its Pursuit of Excellence scholarship program, funded by a percentage of hat accessory sales, the company awards scholarships both locally and nationally. This year alone, two $2,500 scholarships were awarded in Columbus, with five additional national scholarships planned later this summer.
The business also collaborates with organizations like 4-H and FFA through dedicated product lines that support young agricultural leaders and producers. In addition, the company regularly donates products for silent auctions, raffles, and community fundraisers throughout the region.
Locally, Montana Silversmiths has become a familiar presence at events like PBR Billings, NILE, and the Billings rodeo. Those partnerships have helped strengthen ties within the community while introducing the brand to new audiences who share a passion for western culture and craftsmanship.
Whether customers are purchasing jewelry to mark a milestone, earning their first championship buckle, or touring the factory to see the process firsthand, the company hopes each experience feels meaningful and memorable.
Carlee shared that the heart behind the business is simple: “That they celebrate what matters!” Whether someone is “buying a piece of jewelry for a special occasion or winning their first buckle,” the team hopes customers recognize the craftsmanship behind every item. “If they come tour our factory, we hope they see how much attention to detail and manpower goes behind creating each piece.”
After more than five decades in business, Montana Silversmiths continues to grow while holding tightly to the traditions and values that built the company. Following a record-breaking year so far in 2026, the team is looking ahead with excitement and momentum for what’s next.
