Thursday, October 24th is the night that we will be continuing our spooky October series, the UNIVERSAL MONSTER MASH, at the historic Babcock Theatre with the spectacular 1954 chiller, CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON! This entry feels like the last true monster movie that Universal put out, leaving the Gill Man as a sort harbinger of things to come. With the general public's growing interest in science-fiction amidst the atomic age, the CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON appears to be the true stopping point of the studio's attempts at moody gothic horror and the start of them experimenting with science, radiation, exploration, things from space, giant insects, etc. However, the shift in tone by no means means this film is any less fun than the others! CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON has startled and fascinated viewers for 70 years now- being the first theatrically released film shot with a fully functioning underwater camera, there is plenty of majestic, aquatic sequences, and the incredible creature design from Milicent Patrick has wowed audiences for decades, earning the Gill Man definite spot in the realm of horror icons!
A team of scientific researches go on an exploration of the Amazon river and come across a "missing link" that seems to prove man's evolution from fish to mammal. The crew hopes to capture the creature for further research, but the Gill Man proves to be violent and defensive, making the task more difficult than anticipated. Things become even messier when the Gill Man appears to take a liking to the lead scientists fiance, Kay, and attempts to steal her away!
