Friday, April 25th, we're taking out the trash at the historic Babcock Theatre once again with another film in our Garbage Day series! This time, we are taking you to the realm of Eternia for a special screening of Cannon Film's 1987 cult classic disasterpiece, MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE!
Based on the successful 1980s toy line of the same name, this sci-fi fantasy blast was an ill-received flop at the box office upon release, and has since gone on to gain a reputation as a notorious cult film with an optimistic fan base! With a definite fair share of flaws (the urge for producers to throw ordinary human characters into a world of complete fantasy, the surprising lack of recognizable characters, Dolph Lundgren's accent, He-Man using a GUN, etc), this movie has a good dose of undeniably fun perks, like lasers and explosions galore, some very fun costume designs, a fat synthesizer soundtrack, and all the radical 1980s machismo you'd hope to see in a movie like this! MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE is a truly bizarre campfest with a special charm, and we couldn't be more excited to be playing it for GARBAGE DAY!
When the evil lord Skeletor discovers a mysterious power known as the Cosmic Key, he becomes nearly invincible as he seizes Castle Greyskull and the surrounding city. As he begins to drain the life-force from Eternia's sorceress, he awaits the moon of Eternia to eclipse with the Eye of the Universe, which will bestow him with godlike power. However, the courageous warrior, He-Man locates the creator of the Key, who has another one, making him an equal match for Skeletor. When one of the keys is transported to Earth during a battle, both He-Man and Skeletor travel to Earth in search for the weapon.
