Saturday, December 13th, we will be playing one last film in our LATE NIGHT series before the year closes out! To finish off this year's celebratory run of cult films, we will be playing a special 45th anniversary screening of William Lustig's grisly 1980 slasher classic, MANIAC!
An unsettling 80s horror gem, MANIAC has been recognized over the years for being one of the major controversial films in the "Video Nasties" wave of film censorship in the VHS era due to it's unapologetic brutality and explicit gore effects, and has more recently been appreciated by cult fans as a surprisingly nuanced, albeit disturbing, psychological character study, similar to Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer. It's a slasher that will positively dig itself into your memory with it's sickening effects from Tom Savini and its moody NYC winter atmosphere- it's a must-see for any fan of the cult or the gnarly! Plus, it's arguably a Christmas movie! So there's that too!
Joe Spinell stars as Frank Zito, a psychotic maniac deeply scarred by childhood abuse, who prowls the winter streets scalping models and young women, adhering their hair to mannequins in his apartment. Blending in as a painter, Frank begins a relationship with a fashion photographer, who is unaware of his sinister secret personality or the threat he poses to her!
