This May, all month long, we are bringing back our annual MUSICAL MAY series at the historic Babcock Theatre, and one of the films we will be playing is cult director John Waters' 1990 retro rom-com absurdist musical classic, CRY-BABY, in celebration of the film's 35th anniversary! One of John Waters' many pieces of exploitation genius, CRY-BABY is a riotous homage to mid-century greaser culture, rock and roll, and trash cinema that leaves the viewer starstruck! Full of parody and hyperbole, it's a truly insane film oozing with character that starts with its foot slammed on the gas and doesn't hit the brakes until the finish!
In mid-century Baltimore, prim and proper schoolgirl Allison breaks away from her social expectations of assimilating to a traditional nuclear family lifestyle full of squares when she begins to date the titular motorcycle-riding juvenile delinquent. Absurdity and musical chaos ensue as Allison continues to go against the wishes of her high society grandmother, leading to social face off between the greasers and the squares!
