Based on F.W. Murnau 1922 silent vampire film–a classic of German
Expressionist cinema– Nosferatu creates a poetic version of the Dracula story.
Dana Gioia, previous U.S. poet-laureate, has written the brilliant libretto.
Composer Alva Henderson’s rich neo-romantic score for Nosferatu is full of
soaring melodies, arias, duets and trios, with a thrilling Dies Irae for the chorus.
Mr. Henderson’s masterly writing for the voice is without parallel in
contemporary music. Premiered in Billings, Montana in 2004, to standing
ovations, the opera Nosferatu has been triumphantly showcased around the U.S.
and in New York. Henderson and thrilling version of the vampire myth tells the story of Nosferatu, as seen through the eyes of the heroine, a gifted young woman trapped in a tragedy beyond her control.
