Food & Beer pairing competition at MSUB
Ever wonder what beer to pair with different dishes you make? Join Extended Campus at Montana State University Billings for this friendly competition between local brewers who seek to best pair beers they make with selected sweet and savory hors d’ oeuvres on Oct. 30. Participants get a chance to taste each pairing and hear why the brewers selected their chosen beers as a match.
The competitors include Canyon Creek Brewing, Carter’s Brewing, High Plains Brewing and Thirsty Street Brewing Company. Each brewery will be asked to match two beers with a food item assigned to them. The foods include spicy cranberry chicken drummettes, tuna tartare with wasabi crème fraiche, black sesame and crispy wonton, crispy mushroom and beef sliders with sweet and smoky barbeque sauce, and spiced apple cake.
Associate Professor of Political Science and Pre-Law Advisor Paul Pope, Ph.D., will serve as the facilitator for this event. In addition to his passion for MSU Billings and its students, Pope also has a passion for beer and brewing. He is an avid and award-winning home brewer and has served as Vice President of the Rimrock Brewers Guild. Pope is also an instructor for the MSU Billings Craft Brewing and Fermentation Certificate Program and has done several demonstrations on brewing techniques.
At the end of the competition, participants will vote for their favorite via secret ballot and the winner will be announced. The event takes place on Tuesday, Oct. 30 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the MSU Billings College of Education building room 122. Cost for the course is $59, and MSU Billings alumni will receive a 10 percent discount towards the course fee at registration.
