Fiber Art Week @ The YAM
Presented by the Billings Weavers Guild and Prairie Handspinners Guild. The week features daily weaving, spinning, felting, knitting, and fiber preparation demonstrations and displays. Demonstrations afternoons all five days plus Thursday and Friday night. Demonstrations will include an opportunity for hands-on weaving on floor loom and spinning on spindles.

Beginning Crochet Hat with Linda Shelhamer
Wednesday, April 3 from 10-12 pm
Learn the basics of crochet including chain, slip stitch, and half double crochet stitch. Learn to join your yarn into a circle and begin your hat. Bring worsted weight yarn in acrylic or wool and size H crochet hook. Hat uses about 200 yards. Handout includes hat pattern for a child to adult size. Linda will have some $12 kits of yarn and a crochet hook if you would prefer to buy. Class limit 6. Murdoch Gallery.
Beginning Spinning with Julie Norman
Wednesday, April 3 - 1-3 pm
Take that wool fluff and turn it into fun! Learn how wool becomes yarn is this hands-on beginning spinning class. Find out what whorls, cops, butterflies, leaders, and drafting have to with it. Learn about different fibers to spin, the different preparation of fibers and the history of this ancient craft. By the end of the class, you’ll have a little skein of your first handspun yarn and a new skill to enjoy. Julie will provide fiber for $5. Bring a hand spindle or buy one from Julie. Class limit 8. Beginning Knitting with Zoe Jones
Thursday - April 4 - 10-12 pm
Learn the basics of knitting in a few short hours. Learn to cast on, cast off, knit, and purl. Students will be shown how to use their new skills to make a beginners scarf. Zoe will provide a handout covering class topics. Bring size 8 needles and worsted weight yarn. Class limit 6. Education Studio.
Needle Felted Easter Eggs with Tammy Jordan.
Thursday, April 4 - 1-3 pm
In this fun and interactive workshop, you will create your very own festive and decorative needle-felted eggs ornaments. Tammy will provide wool in several colors plus needle felting needles for $5. Class Limit 15. Education Studio.
Wet Felting Scarf with Alena Larsen
Thursday, April 4 - 4-7 pm
Join master felter Alena and create a one-of-a-kind fiber art scarf using yarn and wool. Use wool, water, and soap to combine wool and yarn into an open work scarf. Alena will provide all materials for $10. Class Limit 10. Education Studio.
InkleWeaving with JoAnne Setzer.
Friday, April 5 - 2-4 pm
Inkle weaving is a type of warp-faced weaving on a small loom known as an inkle loom. Items are very sturdy and used for narrow work such as trims, straps, and belts. Students do not need to bring anything because JoAnne will have looms set up to weave on and take home projects. However, if you have an inkle loom bring it and JoAnne will help you tie string heddles, get the warp setup through the heddles and begin weaving. Class Limit 8. Murdoch Gallery.
Get Your Wheels Rolling with Linda Shelhamer and others.
Saturday, April 6 - 10-1 pm
Having trouble with your spinning wheel or getting you and your wheel to work together. Bring your wheel, we will troubleshoot any adjustments or mechanical issues, then get you spinning and plying. No class limit. The class is free. Visible Vault.
Rope & Yarn Making (Children ages 6-14)
Friday, April 5 - 5-7 pm
Experience two fiber-based art activities in one class. First, Barbara Garritson will teach rope making with yarn or twine using a rope-making jig. The students will also learn an alternative doorknob method to use at home. Next, students will use drum carders to process sheep wool into fluff ready to spin. The students will then turn this fiber into yarn using a hand spindle.
